Biotechnol Lett Prof. P S Bisen’s Review on “Biodiesel production with special emphasis on lipase-catalyzed transesterification” has been published in Springer Science Business Media on 18th April 2010. The world is confronted with the twin crisis of fossil fuel depletion and environmental degradation. The indiscriminate extraction and consumption of fossil fuel have led to a reduction in petroleum reserves. The present review gives an overview on biodiesel production technology and analyzes the factors/methods of enzymatic approach reported in the literature and also suggests suitable method on the basis of evidence for industrial production of biodiesel. The increasing industrialization and motorization of the world has led to a steep rise for the demand of petroleum-based fuels Hence, it is necessary to look for alternative fuels, which can be produced from resources available locally within the country such as alcohol, vegetable oils, animal fats and microbial oils etc Biodiesel has become more attractive recently because of its environmental benefits and the fact that it is made from renewable resources. The current challenges are its cost and limited availability of fat and oil resources.
